I have written a bit about the charming children who played with us up on the high platforms of East Mebon, a temple that was once surrounded by water and approached only by boat to the stone steps. The water was the East Baray (Baray = reservoir), measuring 1.2 by 4.3 miles. The reservoir was three meters deep in the 10th century. It has nearly life-sized elephants at each corner of the lower and upper platforms, carved from single pieces of stone...! East Mebon is a pyramid of stacked terraces, each one slightly smaller than the one below, crowned with five towers, and built by King Rajendravarman II who reigned from 944-968 AD.
This was our last stop of the day for temple-sightseeing, and after this we went to a local restaurant with a fixed menu, where they kept bringing food while our kids got more and more tired, and little geckos ran all over the ceiling hunting bugs. Cool!
